The Supreme Court had finally ruled that blacks may go to the same school as whites. However, it was not that easy, society did not agree with the idea very easily. All the black students on Ruby’s block went to the all-black school, Johnson Lockett Elementary school. The nearest school to her was William Frantz white school, which was only 5 blocks away from her house. She was not allowed to go there and had to go to the all black school that was much farther away. However, a lot was about to change when the Supreme Court decided that a test would be given to the black students and the ones with the highest scores would be accepted to the white school nearest them. There were 6 students that were accepted to go a white school. Two of them decided to stay at the all-black school and 3 of them were going to go the other white school. Ruby Bridges was chosen to attend William Frantz Elementary and was going to have to go there alone. She was six years old at the time. The white population in the area did not accept this decision very well. In fact, the situation was becoming very hostile and dangerous for the black population. Ruby’s father had known of this danger and did not want to send her, however, Ruby’s mother thought that if it meant getting a better education for her children, then she was all up for it. She forced her husband to let Ruby go to the school and he agreed.
